National Institute of Justice – developing plans for building ballistic and stab resistant armor..
When we usually view the movies which are specifically dedicated to the police cops or military personnels, we often spot them with protected gears, suits and armors, which are meant for protecting their body against the weapons as well as the enemies. But there is the minimum or rare number of them, which displays female cops with body armor (which are specifically designed for them); either they are left with the choice of choosing the guy’s armor or they are being visualized as super-women who can withstand any type of bullets or bombs!! For normal women, however, all these are illusions and it has become a necessity to develop body protection systems, which are specifically for them!! NIJ or National Institute of Justice is trying to find mechanisms that would upgrade the standards of stab resilient and ballistic armor. They employed a panel which includes the former technical expertise and law enforcement officers who conducts a series of testing procedures to check the desired output would be, after the implementation procedure.
Technical armors for women –the design specifications
One of the most common issues which the designers face in this regard; the body structure of the males as well as females differs and these design changes causes a lot of inefficiency in its functionality. And depending on the nature of materials, the cutting, reshaping and restitching enhances the issues further. The laboratories are often engaged in a series of testing to create new and high quality materials that would work the best for armors of the female cops. Any change in the dimensions would mean configurational changes in the forearm parts of the human body. Different types of armors that would fit the shape and sizes of the female body have to be designed. The molding and the folding procedures are also likely to create vulnerabilities and the whole aim of providing protection would be lost to a great extent.
Beyond the protection factor, comfort factors also determine the functionality of the armors. If the armors are uncomfortable, the chances of wearing them are also low, causing a big threat to the female police officers. Some of the materials which are being suggested includes silicone, clay, ballistic gelatin and Perma-Gel.
One of the criteria which is being tested is BackFace Deformation, how the body is going to get attacked in the deformation areas or regions; Particularly in the chest area, where attacks may be in the form of reddening or bruises to lacerations and tissue necrosis. During the testing stage, many of the female cops tested the different armors, made up of different materials and many of them reported inconvenience factors and the inability of the armor system to cover up the essential areas (which are more prone to attacks).
Discussing the efforts of the ASTM
ASTM, places the common standards and measurements for both male and female armors. They have been designed, in such a way that they would cover all the needs (both the normal and special) of the police cops. Contact us for more details
