If you’re betting the NCAA Tournament , it’s best to start at the top. The No. 1 seeds in the Big Dance were handed out this past Sunday, with the Kentucky Wildcats undoubtedly earning the first overall spot in the Midwest Regional.
Kentucky enters the NCAA Tournament with an unblemished 34-0 SU record and is loaded with pro-ready talent. The Wildcats struggled to cover big spreads early in the season (11-14 ATS in first 25 games), as coach John Calipari’s program rounded into form, but take a 7-1-2 ATS run into their Round of 64 matchup with the winner of the Manhattan/Hampton play-in game. Kentucky is a public darling and often faces inflated spreads, but has still gone a profitable 14-6-1 ATS in its last 21 NCAA games overall.
The Wisconsin Badgers top the West Regional, headlined by center Frank Kaminsky. The versatile 7-footer is a matchup nightmare and will tower over a Coastal Carolina frontcourt that doesn’t go bigger than 6-foot-8 in its regular rotation. It’s no surprise this spread is teetering on a 20-point line for the Badgers, who are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS heading into the NCAA – all of those games coming away from Madison.
The top seed in the East Regional belongs to the Villanova Wildcats, who bring a stellar 24-9 ATS mark into March Madness. The Wildcats could be the most balanced team in the entire field and boast an average scoring margin of +15.4 points, which will be put to the test against a 23-point spread in the opener with Lafayette.
The Duke Blue Devils round out the No. 1 seeds with the clearest path to the Final Four in the South Regional. The Blue Devils’ selection didn’t come without controversy, especially considering the regional is regarded as the softest of the four. Duke is always a tricky play with a strong public following and the fact it’s gone just 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS in its last three tournament openers. The Blue Devils face the winner of the Robert Morris-North Florida play-in game in the Round of 64.
